In this talk, we will introduce our recent results on the relationship between Finsler metrics and the degree of symmetry of closed manifolds. We first show that the degree of symmetry of a closed manifold $M$ is equal to the maximum of the dimensions of the groups of isometries of all possible Finsler metrics on $M$. Moreover, let $M$ be a connected compact manifold and $N(M)$ be the degree of symmetry. If $M$ is not diffeomorphic to a compact rank one Riemannian symmetric space, then there exists a non-Riemannian Finsler metric on $M$ such that the group of the isometries of $F$, $I(M, F)$, has dimension $N(M)$.

鄧少?gòu)?qiáng),南開(kāi)大學(xué)數(shù)學(xué)科學(xué)學(xué)院教授、博士生導(dǎo)師,享受政府特貼專(zhuān)家,教育部數(shù)學(xué)專(zhuān)業(yè)教學(xué)指導(dǎo)委員會(huì)委員,入選教育部?jī)?yōu)秀青年教師資助計(jì)劃和新世紀(jì)優(yōu)秀人才支持計(jì)劃,獲寶鋼優(yōu)秀教師獎(jiǎng),全國(guó)高校自然科學(xué)二等獎(jiǎng)(第一完成人),天津市教學(xué)名師獎(jiǎng),天津市五一勞動(dòng)獎(jiǎng)?wù)碌榷鄠€(gè)獎(jiǎng)項(xiàng)。主要從事李群與微分幾何的研究,在A(yíng)dv. Math., Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., Int. Math. Res. Not. IMRN,Math. Z.,Israel J. Math.等重要期刊發(fā)表論文100余篇,2012年由Springer出版社紐約分社出版的獨(dú)撰專(zhuān)著《Homogeneous Finsler Spaces》列入著名數(shù)學(xué)專(zhuān)著系列Springer Monographs in Mathematics中。主持國(guó)家自然科學(xué)基金重點(diǎn)項(xiàng)目、面上項(xiàng)目,教育部博士點(diǎn)基金項(xiàng)目。
